CARE Student Intern Program

CARE at the Sexual Assault Resource Center is the UC San Diego confidential survivor support and education office for students, staff and faculty impacted by sexual assault, relationship violence and stalking. Interns play a critical role in our prevention efforts by providing student voice and perspectives that directly inform program and outreach initiatives.

The CARE at SARC Student Intern Program hires four student staff to provide peer education as part of prevention education and training efforts at UC San Diego. There are two Focus Areas as part of the Internship Program that students can apply to: two positions to serve as Restorative Justice (RJ) Support Interns and two positions to serve as Sorority & Fraternity Life (SFL) Liaison Interns.

This internship is for students interested in preventing sexual violence on campus, applying restorative justice practices, supporting sorority and fraternity life, contributing to CARE at SARC’s growth and developing personally/professionally.

Note: Due to the confidential nature of our office, interns support prevention and outreach efforts and have no direct involvement with survivor support services.

Intern Roles

Our internship positions for the 2026-2027 academic year have been filled. We will start our application process for the next academic year, 2027-2028, during spring quarter 2027. Follow us on Instagram (@ucsdcare) to learn when applications have been posted, and we encourage students to apply on UC San Diego's Handshake website when they do.

Although each focus area has a specific job function, all student interns provide support with CARE’s outreach efforts, social media presence, processing feedback surveys, event planning and other prevention projects. Students typically work 8-10 hours per week; actual hours may vary depending on the time of the year.

Please fill out this short Student Involvement Interest Form if you want to be added to our interest list. Students will be notified once the positions are posted on Handshake during the Spring quarter.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What can I expect if I am offered the intern role?

Interns are paid student staff who work 8-10 hours per week. Interns learn professional and job-related skills, teamwork, effective communication and a public health approach to prevent sexual and relationship violence. Interns learn the dynamics of a busy and fast-paced office environment as well as the professional etiquette needed to be successful in future employment positions.

Is the office understanding of my student schedule?

Students are expected to work during business hours as well as have availability to work evenings and weekends. Academic success comes first and CARE at SARC takes a holistic approach to student staff supervision, keeping in mind the demands of student life while also holding high expectations and seeking to further develop each student’s knowledge, skills, and abilities. The internship schedule pauses in alignment with campus holidays, closures and breaks.

Do I have to have a specific major?

CARE interns have a wide variety of personal and professional interests. Some have chosen to continue in violence prevention and advocacy whereas others have gone on to graduate and professional schools in their chosen career paths.

What are CARE Intern focus areas?

Each student staff employed at CARE at SARC will have an area of focus for the duration of the academic year. See more information for each focus area below.

  • Restorative Justice (RJ) Support Intern: Student staff will facilitate community building circles using restorative justice practices to engage in prevention education and build connected communities.

  • Sorority and Fraternity Life (SFL) Liaison Intern: Student staff will support prevention programs and outreach efforts connected to Sorority and Fraternity Life on campus. Student staff will also work closely with the Center for Student Involvement’s Sorority and Fraternity Life team.

How are applicants selected for each focus area?

Applicants will identify which focus area is their first and second choice on the application. More details about each focus area will be listed in the job description. First choice focus areas are not guaranteed; CARE staff members will identify the best match based on the applicant pool.
